Also known as the “great tanager,” “black-backed tanager,” and “beach tanager” (Descourtilz). It measures about 15 cm. The male is one of the most colorful tanagers, with a light brown head, neck, rump, and back, cream uropygium and wing coverts, aqua-green throat, chest, and belly, light blue remiges and rectrices, black bill, a black stripe from the eye to the bill, and gray legs. It has black spots on the back; this distinguishes it from the male Black-crowned Tanager (Stilpnia preciosa). Females are less colorful; they only have a light brown head and the rest of the body in greenish tones.
